    Hello All,
I'm looking for some "good" royalty free music, preferably symphony type music...tense/suspenseful/adventurous music, for under $150. I plan on using this music in an action film I will be shooting shortly. What's the best I can get for my money?
    Thanks Much!

    David,

I am looking for the same thing too. I stumbled across a few thing last night while searching the web. I found a program called Smartsound for what is called "soundtrack creation" I don't know how it works, but just went to the website www.smartsound.com and ordered the free demo CD to see how it works. I also found "the music bakery" and they had some good stuff in the price range you are looking for. I am new to the royalty free thing, so any suggestions are welcome. Jeremy

Acid loops work well too. You can buy the loops for about 50 dollars a disc and then use the free 8 track version of Acid. You can also just buy indivual clips after previewing straight from the website: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/loop_libraries/default.asp

I don't buy a lot of music but I look at a lot and this week I received a disk I purchased from a British source. It has good atmospheric tracks but what sets it apart is a collection of short bits in various beat rates that can be layered in for added effect - like the dramatic audio "punctuation" in suspense pieces. You can demo it on-line at www.2b-royaltyfree.com

Doing a movie huh? If it is not going to be sold then you can more than likely get your music for free if you look around enough. You obviously can't go get Hans Zimmer or somebody like that to do this for you but if you go out on the internet you can find a lot of small bands that will do it for just a screen credit in your piece. Um... mp3.com used to be a great place for finding music for this purpose and all you had to do was send an email some WILL say no but that's alright there is some REALLY good film music out there if you look hard enough. One person you might want to check out, probably the best artist on mp3.com for film music is edgen. I requested to use his music in my short and he had no problem with it. Here is his homepage http://www.edgen.com/ hopefully he'll be as nice to you as he was to me. Best of luck with your movie.

    Hey, try freeplaymusic.com

    http://www.freeplaymusic.com/

GREAT stuff there. I've used their tracks as background music for my brother's product demo videos.

  8. :D David, I have Sonicfire Pro from Smartsound and it is costly but worth every penny if you are going to make money doing videos or films. The tracks you buy from them have been custom tailored so that just about any element you swap around will fit in almost seamlessly. Check out Safe Harbor at www.sharbor.com sometimes their deals beat Smartsounds. If you aren't going pro then I agree with the other members about the free stuff.

I'm considering buying some production/royalty free music from www.music2hues.com. Thier price is reasonable and the music I've heard from their online demo is good. They have a nice selection and at least at one time would send a couple of demo discs on request.

Hey I came across this post surfing google.
I happen to know of a great royalty free music
    company
    .

    I’ll admit my husband works
for this company as the webprogrammer. So I may be
biased but it is still great music at a great price. One song in multiple versions and multiple formats for under $20. Cheapest that i have been able to find.

They are just getting started and I think they have some
free deals going on right now. It is www.stock20.com. I would reccomend checking it out for yourself.

You might also try Backtraxx -- the library has a GREAT selection/variety, and you can find it on ebay (I'll bet) at a really decent price.

  17. I have spent around $200 on RF music over the past year or so. I also purchased SonicFire Pro 3 about a year ago for over $300 (their new offering version 4 has more capabilities for around $200). But you cannot beat the new Sony offering - Cinescore - less than $200 with a slew of themes to work with (the variations are mind boggling). Check them out at http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/products/showproduct.asp?pid=1013
and look at the tutorials to see the full power of the product.

  19. Hi there,

Well, without trying to sound too pompous - with music, like everything else in life, you get what you pay for... 'Free' music tends to sound remarkably like 'free' music...ie: don't even go there...

There are a lot of guys pedalling their wares in this genre on the net -
problem is - most of them are not really pros. It's not as simple as buying a synthesizer and a computer and laying down a few simplistic ideas - which is what 90% of the stuff out there is....this is quite simply not the best way to come up with great music - but you'll find that this is what most 'copyright free, royalty free music' actually tends to actually be.

Ask yourself this: you spend countless hours making your production look as good as you possibly can - filming, editing, syncing, splicing, adding effects etc. - why ruin it with a sub-standard soundtrack?

It takes years of experience in the music industry to get truly good at
something - just like video/film etc...so my advice is; go to someone with a
    professional track record...

  20. Sorry - Listened to the samples - They are no better for my uses than anything I already have in my buyout libraries - Not as good even.

There are also equally good pieces you can create with Acid, Sonic Fire Pro or Cinescore.

Maybe you should put up something other than the two songs - Also, TwistedTracks.com has better music in the genre you have selected - You either need to get much better or branch out into other areas.

Just MHO - Other opinions may differ.

  21. It wasn't all that noticable maybe, but they had other pages with more selections, not just two songs.

I'd like to see more offerings for wedding videographers. We often use complete songs - three to four minutes or so, but often we need filler music - from half a minute to three minutes. Some romantic pieces that were loopable would be nice. Sonicfire pro already has this, so something that would compliment their selections would be nice.

  22. Hi Hank -

I do mostly corporate video and need stuff from 30 seconds to 15 minutes (mostly around 3-5 minutes). I like the new stuff from Cinescore but still love my Sonic Fire Pro as well - I will continue to use both but probably won't upgrade SFP until the next version (I am still kinda ticked that I spent over $330 about a year ago and they want another $200 for the new version now - I paid slightly more - $305 - for my Vegas+DVD upgrade and that included Cinescore with forty themes!).

I also have purchased some buyout libraries on eBay that were fairly resonable and decent for the $$$ (I have even heard some of these tracks on TV).

I have definite tastes when it comes to background music and sometimes have to recut an entire piece because a client wants different music (did I say client - I meant person getting a huge favor cause I'm not charging 'em yet) and the cut points are different.

I just wish that SmartSound would allow another market for their disks - Every time one shows up on eBay they have it pulled. Either that or they need to give a better deal on the upgrade!

Sorry - Just found them - Will give a listen.

For others, click on the arrow at the bottom left of the Products page that says "More Tracks" (boy, do I feel dumb).

Yes, there are quite a few more tracks than the two. There is also a 'more tracks' button to the upper right as well :)

The material is guitar oriented - but far more creative than most of the guitar stuff out there I think... I find far too much of the stuff out there tends to be very plastic sounding - fine for weddings and barmitsvahs perhaps - but pretty useless for movies, films, ads, games etc, where you need more creative and original sounds....

Well, to be quite frank - I checked out twistedtracks.com - and although better than many such websites, the material was still very generic and unimaginative IMO. Fine if you want to play it very safe I guess - but not much use for larger, pro/semi-pro projects of any commercial nature, who tend to be looking for creativity first & foremost...

Here is my 2 cents. Don;t use royalty free music, it costs too much upfront. You can to almost anything you want with some good software ools:

    Fruity Loops about $50

Garritan Personal Orchestra with Overture about $200, you need to make sure you get a package that comes with overture software. You can find it at Geniesoft's site.

or you could use Sony's Cinescore. I have never used it before but it seems powerful. All these require a little work from youbut that produce royalty free music that you don't have to buy

With Garritan you and Overture you can just download on of the billions of free midi's out there and have them played out: try this out for example:

Catabile - used in some weddings, and I know a lot of people here do weddings.

    Here is the original midi:

    www.tyndanproductions.com/offtopic/Cantabile.mid

Here is the mp3 created using that midi. This took me about 3 minutes:

    www.tyndanproductions.com/offtopic/Cantabile.mp3

Garritan does orchestrated music, but fruity loops can do the techo stuff. and they are easy enough to use.

Yes - that's quite clever - and sounds reasonably authentic...considering the low quality of the original. One small problem though: you are *still* limited to public domain music, in this case, classical. That's fine if all you ever need is classical music or old, traditional folk songs....anything else and you either have to pay a lot of money to use someone's copyrighted material, or use copyright free music. I don't really see any other alternatives. Most of the 'free' compositions out there on the web are free for a very good reason.... :)

    Cheers,

    Jimbo

  29. I was at a NY Vegas Users Group meeting one night last year and they had Shawn Pelton (drummer from the the Saturday Night Live band, who has performed with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Marc Cohn, Celine Dion, Billy Joel, Luciano Pavarotti, more...) who extolled the virtues of Sony Acid Pro and explained how he used it professionally as well. There are also some very nice compositions on Acid Planet that are available for use in your projects for the asking.

    Just MHO.

Yeah - I use Sony Acid to edit my music - it's a fantastic product allright. As is Sony Vegas IMO. As for a music *making* tool though...it's ok if you don't mind computerised music. But it's not particularily organic sounding...
